Description

Granary Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th century. It features a timber frame with brick infill panels, some of which are rendered, and has brick replacement walling. The roof is tiled, and there is a brick stack located at the rear main ridge in the center. The building has a hall and cross-wing type plan, consisting of a three-bay hall range and a two-bay cross-wing. It is a single storey with an attic that includes a dormer.

The framing includes three square panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with short, straight braces in the upper panels of the main range and long straight braces in the lower corners of the cross-wing gable ends. The roof structure features queen strut trusses with three struts to the collar and 'V'-struts in the apex at the gable ends.

On the front elevation facing south, the main part has a ground floor casement window in the left bay, a gabled dormer with a casement, and two planked doors. The cross-wing gable end has a casement window in the central panel beneath the tie-beam, along with pierced, shaped bargeboards. There is also a mullioned window at the angle where the main part meets the cross-wing.

Inside, the cottage has single, trenched purlins and queen strut trusses. The cross-wing is only floored in the rear bay, and there is a winder staircase located in the central bay of the main part.
