Description

The Cob House Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse, with alterations and additions dating to the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed with a timber frame, originally with painted brick infill, but now largely brick, with tiled roofs. The roof has a double span and a central chimney made of sandstone rubble, featuring four diagonal brick shafts with projecting cap courses, along with another brick stack on the south-facing slope. The farmhouse comprises two parallel ranges aligned east to west, each containing two framed bays, with a lobby entrance on the west front elevation. It has two storeys and an attic.

The timber framing features four square panels from sill to wall-plate. Queen strut trusses are located in the gable ends. The front elevation includes 20th-century casement windows throughout, a wall with plank weatherboards, a casement window in the left gable end, and a bay window in the right gable end. Above each is a first-floor window and an attic light. A central, gabled brick porch, weatherboarded in the gable end, with a planked door, side lights, and weathering, has been added in the 20th century.

Inside, the south range has single, trenched purlins, while the north range has double, trenched purlins, both supported by intermediate queen strut trusses. A wood-mullioned window is incorporated into the north range's intermediate truss. The main beams are stop-chamfered with run-out stops. Other notable features include back-to-back fireplaces and a dog-leg staircase to the rear of the north range, featuring a moulded handrail and turned balusters. There is a large outshut on the north side of the building, and a 20th-century extension connects the farmhouse to a detached kitchen located at the rear.
