Description

Woodend Farmhouse is an early 17th-century farmhouse, with alterations and additions in the 20th century. It is constructed of timber framing with painted brick infill, brick replacement walling and refacing, and tiled roofs. A sandstone rubble chimney is located at the rear centre of the main roof, and an external brick stack is on the left side elevation. The building follows an "F" shape; the main range extends east to west with three framed bays, and the north elevation now forms the front. Two adjoining wings are located to the rear of the east end and centre, each containing two framed bays with extended and refaced gable ends. A timber-framed single-story extension adjoins the west elevation of the central wing, featuring a brick ridge stack at the junction. An outshut is attached to the rear west end of the main range, connecting to the single-story extension, resulting in a squared-up overall plan. The farmhouse has two stories and a cellar. The timber framing features irregular panels, primarily square, with four panels from sill to wall plate. Upper corners of the bays have long swept and short straight braces. King post trusses are in the gable ends of the main range. The front elevation has irregular window placement, including three ground floor casements, three first floor casements, and an additional casement to the stair landing. A gabled timber-framed porch is on the right side of the central bay, where a planked door is located. The roof was not inspected, but internal main beams are stop-chamfered with run-out stops. The central bay contains an open-well staircase with a moulded handrail and spiral balusters on the lower flight. The farmhouse is situated on a moated site.
