Description

The barn and stables, located about 30 yards south-east of Brook Farmhouse, date from around 1700 and have been altered in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. The structure is part timber-framed and weatherboarded on a rubble base, with sections of brick and a roof made of plain tiles and corrugated iron. It has an L-shaped plan. The barn features six framed bays aligned north-east to south-west, with a wagon bay and opposing cart entries in the second bay from the north-east end. The north-west elevation includes a corrugated iron lean-to canopy supported by a timber post above the cart entrance, a ledged and battened door, and a lean-to outshut with a catslide roof to the right of the cart entrance.

Inside, the wall framing consists of four panels from the sill to the wall plate, with some short straight lower corner braces. The roof structure includes collar and tie-beam trusses with struts, some intermediate tie-beam trusses, and two 20th-century inserted brick partitions. One of the intermediate roof trusses incorporates a reused cruck blade, and there is a single tier of purlins. The stable, which adjoins to the north-west, has three bays and two levels. The central and north-westernmost bays are made of brick and feature a two-course band at the upper floor level. The north-west gable end contains eleven tiers of pigeon holes and alighting ledges, with two tiers beneath the eaves level on the south-west side. The south-west elevation has two ground floor two-light windows, an upper floor square window, and a ledged and battened door.
