Description

Upton Court is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with an additional wing from the late 17th century and further alterations from the early 18th century, along with minor changes in the 20th century. The building features diagonal and ornamental herringbone timber-framing with wattle-and-daub and painted brick infill, a sandstone rubble plinth, and stacks with brick shafts, including a main western stack with decorative shafts. The south front has been refronted with brick and has tiled roofs.

The structure has an irregular half-H plan with a through-passage and a later wing added to the eastern end, featuring axial and lateral stacks. The main entrance is located on the north front, accessed through a projecting two-storey porch. The farmhouse is two storeys high with attics and a part cellar.

On the north front, the later wing to the left has square panelled timber-framing and is largely refaced in brick on the ground floor. It includes two 2-light and one 3-light casement windows, along with a 3-light 20th-century window to the right of a ledged door. The gable end of the cross-wing to the right, which formerly had a jettied upper storey, is now underbuilt in brick and features one 2-light and one 3-light casement window on the upper floor, as well as two similar casements on the ground floor.

The central hall range to the right has a projecting two-storey gabled porch with a jettied upper storey supported by a moulded bressummer. It includes one 2-light casement window on the upper floor and an inner ledged door. The hall to the right has two 2-light casement windows on both floors. The gable end of the western cross-wing to the right, which also has a former jettied upper storey now underbuilt, features one 3-light and one single-light casement window on the upper floor, and one 3-light window on the ground floor.

Inside, the building retains mid-17th century panelling in a room in the east cross-wing. The hall has later 17th century panelling, with a painting over the fireplace depicting a house and garden. The south-west room retains panelling from around 1700, featuring a hunting scene over the fireplace. The late 17th century west staircase has turned balusters and a moulded handrail.
