Description
The Old Rectory is a house dating from the 16th century, with later alterations. It features square-panelled and close-studded timber-framing, painted brick and plastered infill, a sandstone rubble plinth, and stone slate roofs. The building has a central hall flanked by cross-wings, a large axial stack, and a through-passage. It stands two storeys high with attics.
On the south front, the gable end of the left cross-wing has a projecting upper storey to the west, which includes a moulded bressummer, a small two-light window in the gable, a three-light window on the first floor, and a similar window on the ground floor. The central hall block has irregularly spaced windows on the first floor, featuring one three-light window and two two-light windows, along with a three-light window to the left of a square-headed doorway that has a moulded frame and a ledged door. The gable end of the right cross-wing has two two-light windows on the first floor and three similar windows arranged side by side in square panelled framing on the ground floor. Although the interior was not inspected, it is reported to retain triangular doorheads and fireplaces with moulded jambs.
