Description

HANLEY CASTLE CP A 440 (west side) SO 84 SW 3/111 Merevale Farmhouse - II

House. Circa 1600 with earlier remains and early C18 alterations. Timber- framing with tile roof. Two storeys with attic, four bays. Framed in irregular square panels. Duplication of principal posts between first and second bays and third and fourth bays suggests that the house is of several builds and that a gable or gables may have been removed from the facade. Windows are casements of irregular size. Left-hand window on first floor of four lights with timber mullions and transom under a timber pediment with shield of arms. Attic dormers are gabled with decorative framing. One dormer tie-beam is carved with an illeg- ible C18 date. Door, to right of first bay, is battened and studded and is set within a renewed frame. Roof hipped at left. Chimney at left with diagonal shafts. Interior: stair turret at rear contains dog-leg stair of c1600 in four flights with closed string, tapering square balusters with strapwork decoration, moulded handrail and square newels with finials and balls. Central room on first floor lined with C17 square panelling.
