Description

Merevale Farmhouse is a house dating from around 1600, with earlier remains and early 18th-century alterations. It features timber-framing and a tile roof, standing two storeys high with an attic and four bays. The framing is made up of irregular square panels. The duplication of principal posts between the first and second bays and the third and fourth bays indicates that the house may have been built in stages, and suggests that one or more gables may have been removed from the front. The windows are casements of various sizes, with the left-hand window on the first floor consisting of four lights, featuring timber mullions and a transom beneath a timber pediment that displays a shield of arms. The attic dormers are gabled and have decorative framing, with one dormer tie-beam carved with an unreadable 18th-century date. The door to the right of the first bay is battened and studded, set within a renewed frame. The roof is hipped on the left side, and there is a chimney on the left with diagonal shafts. Inside, the stair turret at the rear contains a dog-leg stair from around 1600, consisting of four flights with a closed string, tapering square balusters decorated with strapwork, a moulded handrail, and square newels topped with finials and balls. The central room on the first floor is lined with 17th-century square panelling.
