Description
1, Cross Hands is a house that dates back to the 17th century, with additions from the 19th century and alterations from the 20th century. The building features timber framing with brick infill and a shingle roof, arranged in a T-plan. It has two storeys, with the main range being a one-bay structure made entirely of 19th-century brick, which has undergone 20th-century alterations. There is a doorway located on the right side. The cross-wing on the right displays exposed timber framing in irregular square panels, with some of the front wall framing replaced in the mid-20th century. This wing is also one bay wide and features long straight tension braces that rise from the sill to the jowled heads of the principal posts. The exposed truss includes vertical struts between the tie-beam and collar, along with a king strut and a smaller collar above. A chimney stack projects from the right-hand wall of the wing. The interior was not accessible during the survey in May 1986, but it was noted that the main range reportedly contains no framing.
