Description
The towpath bridge over the entrance to the canal basin, located approximately 150 meters west of Watery Lane in Tipton, is a mid-19th century structure. It is made of cast iron and features brick abutments with some sandstone dressings. The bridge has a single shallow segmental arch, and its sides are a single casting that is pierced to create a lattice pattern of saltire crosses. This bridge spans the entrance to a boat yard that was once the Tipton railway interchange basin, which was one of 26 transhipment depots built along the Birmingham Canal starting in the 1850s.
