Description
Merrion House is a villa built around 1834, with later additions including a late 19th-century range to the rear left and a 20th-century garage to the left. The building features pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco on the front and garden facades, topped by a Welsh slate roof.
The exterior is two storeys high with three first-floor windows. On the first floor, there are two 6/6 sash windows and a blind opening, all with sills and in plain reveals, with the central window being narrower. The ground floor has a central entrance accessed by two roll-edged steps leading to a three-panel door with an overlight, framed by Tuscan pilasters, a frieze, a cornice, and a blocking course. To the left of the entrance is a 6/6 sash window with a sill, and to the right is a blind opening, both in plain reveals. The roof is hipped with tall stacks at the rear, front, and ends.
On the garden facade, the first floor has two 6/6 sash windows, while the ground floor features two tall 6/9 sash windows, the right one having margin-lights, all in plain reveals. The left return includes a 6/6 sash window with a flat arch of gauged brick and a tall, narrow 6/6 staircase sash with a cambered arch.
Inside, the villa retains original plasterwork and joinery, including an openwell staircase with stick balusters and a wreathed handrail, cornices in most rooms, four-panel doors throughout, double folding doors, and a marble fireplace in the ground-floor drawing room. Most windows have shutters, and there are cellars.
Merrion House forms an architectural group with Nos 123 and 125 Radford Road.
