Description
64 Binswood Avenue is a villa from the mid-19th century that has seen later additions and alterations. It features a pinkish-brown brick construction with a painted stucco facade, a Welsh slate roof, and ashlar copings.
The building is two storeys tall and has three first-floor windows. The right side of the villa projects and is gabled, with a canted bay window on the ground floor. It has a chamfered plinth and three roll-edged steps leading to the central entrance, which consists of a part-glazed six-panel door with an overlight and sidelights set within a chamfered, segmental-arched opening. This entrance is topped with a moulded hood that has face stops. The windows are 1/1 sashes throughout, featuring sills and chamfered surrounds, and all but the bay windows have hoodmoulds with foliate stops. A decorative band runs along the first floor, and there is a moulded eaves cornice. The front gable showcases a decorative quatrefoil in a recessed, chamfered square niche, topped with a pinnacle at the apex and copings. There are stacks at the ends and rear of the building.
Inside, the staircase features elongated onion-on-bobbin balusters, and there are four-panel doors. The ground floor has a marble fireplace, while the first floor includes cast-iron fireplaces. Decorative cornices and architraves with cornices are present on some doors.
Binswood Avenue was laid out around 1828, and numbers 62-70 Binswood Avenue form a group with this villa.
