Description

Gatcombe is a villa dating to around 1850, with subsequent additions and alterations, including a rear extension. The exterior is constructed of pinkish-brown brick with a painted stucco front facade, a cement-tile roof, and a cast-iron verandah topped with lead. The building follows a central hallway plan.

The villa is two storeys high and has three first-floor windows. It features quoins and a plinth, with a continuous moulded sill band to the first floor. The first-floor windows are long-pane sashes with horns, the upper pane rounded and containing margin lights within tooled surrounds. The ground-floor windows are tall long-pane sashes of a similar design. A part-glazed front door, with a basket-arched overlight in a tooled surround with scrolled brackets, is accessed by two roll-edged steps. A modillion cornice and wide eaves adorn the building, along with end stacks. A continuous verandah runs along the ground floor, displaying a double-scroll motif on the uprights.

The interior showcases moulded cornices, with floral motifs in a room to the left on the ground floor and grape designs in a room to the right. An open-well staircase is present, featuring a wreathed handrail and balusters of a rod-with-central-bobbin design.

The building forms an architectural group with numbers 14-26 (even) Avenue Road.
