Description
Moyola Lodge is a villa built in 1856, with later additions and alterations, including bay windows and a rear extension added around 1900. It was developed by Matthew Wise and built by Charles Wincote, with Algernon Sydney Field as the first owner. The villa is constructed of pinkish-yellow brick with a painted stucco front facade and features a Welsh slate roof.
The building stands two storeys high and has three first-floor windows. It has a central hallway plan with vermiculated quoins and a plinth. There are two steps leading to the central entrance, which consists of a four-fielded-panel door topped with a cambered overlight, framed by fielded Tuscan pilasters, an architrave, frieze, and cornice. The canted bays have one-over-one sash windows with tooled surrounds and sills. On the first floor, there is a continuous moulded sill band projecting below the windows, which also feature one-over-one sashes with margin-lights in plain reveals and sills. The wide eaves are adorned with modillions, and there are end and rear stacks.
Inside, there is an open newel staircase with onion-on-bobbin balusters, along with cornices and fireplaces on both the ground and first floors. Historically, Algernon Sydney Field previously lived at and maintained offices at No. 42 Warwick Street. Moyola Lodge is part of an architectural group of villas that includes Nos. 12, 14, and 18-26 Avenue Road.
