Description

This villa, now divided into two dwellings at 20 and 20A Avenue Road, was built around 1848 to 1856, with later additions and alterations. It is constructed of pinkish-yellow brick with painted and scored stucco to the front facade, topped with a Welsh slate roof and featuring a cast-iron verandah. The building follows a central hallway plan and is two storeys high with three windows on the first floor. It has a plinth and alternately vermiculated quoins. Two roll-edged steps lead to a central entrance with a part-glazed, part-panelled door and a cambered overlight, set within a Gibbs surround. The windows are 1/1 sashes with margin-lights and sills in tooled surrounds, with larger windows on the ground floor. A continuous first-floor sill band projects below the windows; the first-floor windows have Venetian blinds and blind boxes. The roof is hipped with end and rear stacks. A continuous verandah to the ground floor has a double-scroll motif on the uprights. On the left return, a blind box and Venetian blinds remain on the first floor. The interior has not been inspected. The building contributes to a group value with numbers 12-18 (even) and 22, 24, and 26 Avenue Road.
