Description

The George Hotel is a late 18th-century hotel with earlier origins, located on Shipston on Stour High Street. The main part of the building is constructed of brick in Flemish bond, with a painted stone plinth, quoins, and eaves cornices resting on consoles, topped by a coped parapet. It has a 20th-century tile roof, stone coped gables, and brick end stacks on stone bases. The hotel is three storeys high plus an attic, with a five-window front. Originally, the building had a two-unit plan. The centre features a large elliptical archway with a keyblock, likely made of rendered stone. A 20th-century door and glazing now obscure this archway. To the ground floor, there are two openings to the left and right. The first and second floors each have five window openings, featuring 12-pane sashes with segmental arches and keyblocks, likely made of rendered stone. Three 20th-century flat-topped dormers are also present. To the left, there is a three-storey rendered section with a bow window rising to all three floors; the ground and first floor bow windows contain three 12-pane sashes, and the second floor bow window contains three 9-pane sashes. A rendered parapet tops this section. Inside, there is a stone chamfered fireplace with a flat lintel, reportedly dated to the 16th century. At the rear, there is a long two-storey range constructed of brick and stone, and behind the rendered bow window range, a 18th-century stone and brick range is located.
