Description
The chest tomb, located approximately 12 meters south of the chancel of the Church of St Mary Magdalene, commemorates Elizabeth, the wife of Richard Field of Blackford, who died in 1819. The tomb features a signed inscription on the lower part of the north face, which reads '..... INKBERROW, DELN. ET SC...'. It is constructed from ashlar and rests on a pinkish-brown brick plinth, showcasing a late Neo-Classical style. The tomb measures approximately 2 meters high, 1.75 meters long, and 1 meter wide.
It has a plinth with a stepped base and a rectangular chest adorned with quarter-balusters at the indented angles. Each long side of the chest includes an oval inscription panel framed in a square with fluted decoration. The design is completed with a cavetto-moulded cornice and a shallow pyramidal surmounting slab. The west face bears a badly worn inscription with remnants of delicately carved decoration. The south face is inscribed with the words: 'SACRED / to the Memory of Eliz Wife of / Richd Field late of Black-Ford / who died Novr 9th 1819. Aged 61 Years'. All the listed items in the churchyard are part of a group.
