Description
The Colleton Tomb, located in the churchyard of St Mary the Virgin, is a chest tomb dedicated to Elizabeth Colleton, who died in 1721. It is made of Portland stone and features a grey ledger slab that includes an armorial relief and an inscription. The side panels are intricately carved with drapery, cherubs' heads, and skulls. The end panel showcases relief carvings of a sacred still-life, which includes a winged hourglass, a crown, a book, and a quill, along with an armorial cartouche. The tomb is adorned with angle balusters that have gadrooning and a heavy egg-and-dart moulding. This tomb is historically referred to as the 'Maiden's Tomb'. Elizabeth Colleton was the daughter of Sir Peter Colleton, Baronet, and she resided in Ealing. This tomb is considered an exceptional example of 18th-century chest tomb design.
