Description
Two chest tombs are located in a railed enclosure about 55 metres northwest of the west tower of the Church of St Mary. These tombs date from the early 19th century and are made of ashlar and wrought iron. The enclosure features rectangular plan railings with standards that have urn finials.
The northern tomb has bold corner balusters decorated with crossed sprigs of wheat, a raised inscription panel flanked by borders of stylised flowers, a moulded cornice, and a bevelled top. The inscription reads: "Sacred to the Memory of Lewis Chambers late of the Lower Court in this Parish who departed this life 20th of May 1810 aged 73 years."
The southern tomb also has bold corner balusters, but these are decorated with paterae. It features a raised inscription panel flanked by borders of classical urns above floral motifs, a fluted frieze, a moulded cornice, and a bevelled top. The inscription states: "Sacred to the Memory of Ann, Relict of the late Lewis Chambers, she departed this life the 17th of September 1814 in the 64 year of her Age."
These tombs are notable examples of stone masonry and enhance the setting of the church, contributing to the group value of the other memorials in the churchyard.
