Description

Upper Court is a farmhouse dating from the mid-16th century, with 17th-century and later additions. It is constructed of rubble with a stone slate roof and has a U-plan layout. The front range runs north to south and forms the original house, while the east-west range extends from the south end. Another north-south range contains the offices, including the kitchen and dairy.

The north-south front range features a cross-wing at the north end, which is about the same length as the width of the house due to a 19th-century brick lean-to on the east side. There is a central porch on this side that is essentially mid-16th century, along with a stack on the west wall of the cross-wing and another at the south-west corner. The east-west range is from the mid-17th century, and the other north-south range dates to the late 17th century.

The west front has two storeys with a gable to the left and two lateral stacks. The fenestration is irregular, consisting of a 1:2:1 arrangement of windows with 4-pane flush boxed sashes. On the ground floor, there are two 4-pane boxed sashes to the left under concrete lintels, a half-glazed door left of centre with an overlight and a late 19th-century gabled hood, and a 4-light casement with a concrete lintel to the right.

The north wall of the north cross-wing has a reset lancet near the north-east corner, which may be from the 13th century and possibly sourced from Clifford Castle. The porch on the east wall is likely early 17th century, featuring exposed framing and two curved raking struts to the gable. Inside, there are heavily moulded ceiling beams in the central ground floor room and a moulded door surround in the upper room of the porch. Additionally, a mid-19th-century outshot contains a staircase in the Chinese Chippendale style.
