Description
Apsley House is a house built around 1808 for John Burman, a banker, with later additions and alterations. It features reddish brick in Flemish bond, a Welsh slate roof, and coping stones on the gables. The house has a central staircase plan and is two storeys high, with three first-floor windows. There are two side ranges, each also two storeys with a single-window range.
The main range has 6/6 sash windows with horns on the first floor. The ground floor features a central entrance with a Tuscan porch that has a frieze decorated with a lion mask and swag, along with a cornice with guttae. The entrance includes a part-glazed panelled door with a fanlight in a pilastered surround, and 8/8 sash windows. The side bays mainly have 8/8 sash windows, all set in plain reveals with sills, mostly featuring flat arches. The main range has raised gables with copings, while the end ranges have hipped roofs and rear stacks.
Inside, there is a central dog-leg staircase with stick balusters and a wreathed handrail, along with six-panel doors. All listed buildings on The Green form a group.
