Description

Watermill Cottage is a house dating back to around 1600, with significant additions from the 18th century and the mid-20th century. The house is timber-framed with plaster infill on a rubble plinth, and has brick detailing; the roof is thatched with brick end stacks. The house presents as a gable facing the street, with a two-unit plan. An outshut is located to the left end and is joined to what is believed to be a former blacksmith’s shop by a 20th-century block. A further single-storey wing was added to the right return in the late 20th century.

The single-storey plus attic house has a two-window front. The left end entrance has a plank door. The ground floor windows consist of one with a two-light, small-paned casement and another with a two-light, 20th-century leaded casement. Two raking dormers each have two-light, 20th-century leaded casements with iron opening casements. The single-storey wing has exposed timber framing, brick detailing to each end, and windows with 20th-century leaded casements. The street-facing elevation is similar, with a 20th-century porch and a tiled-roof lean-to outshut with a 20th-century casement.

Inside, the house features a flagstone floor and stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. There is a restored fireplace with a bressumer, and a winding stair to the left. The roof structure includes thin principals and purlins, with one purlin having a forked end. There are also some wide-boarded doors. The wing of the house contains trusses with raking struts.
