Description
Bay Cottage and The Retreat are a pair of cottages with origins in the 17th century, but they were mostly altered in the late 18th and 19th centuries, with further changes made in the mid-20th century. They are constructed of brick, with No. 24 featuring a brick dentil cornice. The cottages have a tiled roof and a brick stack at the rear. They have a double-depth plan and consist of two storeys with a five-window range. The cottages have modern doors and a gate leading to a through-passage, along with 20th-century leaded-light casements. No. 24 includes a canted bay window, while No. 25 has a segmental bay window; both have tiled canopies over the windows and doors. Additionally, No. 25 features a second bay and a casement under a tile canopy to the right. No. 24 has painted lintels on the first floor, and its interior is noted for having a timber-framed partition wall. This pair of cottages is an important part of a row of buildings and is included for its group value.
