Description
The Old School House is a former school and master’s house, now a residential property, built between 1847 and 1848 and designed by William Butterfield. The building features coursed lias stone with quoins and limestone dressings, topped with tile roofs and coped gables. It has an L-shaped plan and is designed in the Gothic Revival style, consisting of one storey and an attic with a six-window range. The school section projects forward on the left side.
The entrance is located in an outshut at the re-entrant angle, featuring a half-glazed door set in an arch. There is a three-light traceried window with trefoiled lights and quatrefoils, along with an outer arch made of thin voussoirs. The main range has a bias plank door and two three-light mullioned and transomed windows, a two-light mullioned window, and a lancet window with a transom; all openings are adorned with relieving arches. The roof levels vary, and there are four dormers with 20th-century casements and glazed apexes. The left side of the building has two projecting external stacks, although the shafts are missing, and there are paired and four single lancets, with the centre three featuring transoms. The rear of the building is similar to the front. There is a late 19th-century to early 20th-century brick addition to the school. The interior has not been inspected.
