Description

St Mawgan School is a building constructed in 1863 by William Butterfield, with an extension added in 1876 by Silvanus Trevail. It has undergone some alterations and additions in the 20th century. The structure is made of stone rubble with granite dressings and features a slate roof with ridge tiles and gable ends. There is a rear lateral stack made of stone rubble with a brick shaft, and an axial stack to the right made of stone ashlar with an embattled cornice.

The layout includes a main schoolroom on the left, with a crosswing to the right that contains a large classroom at the front and a smaller room at the rear. The main schoolroom is heated by the rear lateral stack, while the two rooms in the wing are heated by the axial stack. A porch is set at the angle of the crosswing at the front. There are 20th-century additions to the rear left of the building. The design is in the Gothic style.

The exterior features an asymmetrical single-storey front. On the left, there are two 20th-century two-light casements with a buttress between them, and a stone quatrefoil window at the end left. The porch has a shouldered arched doorway with a plank door and a buttress. The gable end of the front wing has two tall lancets with 20th-century glazing and a breather above. The right side has two plate-glass sashes with shouldered arches, and to the right, there is a gable over two larger similar sashes. The left gable end features a large mullion and transom window that is set off-centre to the right, with a chamfered granite lintel and relieving arch. Above this is a corbelled bellcote with a hipped roof and a bell. There is a small single-storey privy attached to the left. At the rear, the gable end of the crosswing has two tall lancets, and the rear of the main schoolroom includes 20th-century single-storey additions with a stone quatrefoil window to the right, similar to the front.

Inside, the main schoolroom has an arched-brace and scissors truss roof, and there is a panelled and glazed partition wall leading to the crosswing.
