Description
The Guild Rooms and The Porch is a historic building located on Bearley Road in Aston Cantlow. Originally constructed in the mid-15th century as the Guild House, it was altered in the 19th century and converted in 1960, as noted by a datestone. The building features a timber frame with close studding, lath and plaster infill, and a brick plinth. It has a mid-20th century tile roof and a brick ridge stack.
The structure is two storeys high with an attic and comprises four bays. The front of the building juts out on square posts supported by curved brackets. The ground floor includes three plank doors and three adjoining 3-light iron casements. To the right, there is an open whitewashed brick and lias porch featuring an arched studded door set within a wooden arch. The first floor displays a single curved tension brace, with small 20th-century wood casements and leaded lights throughout.
On the left side, the ground floor has two large curved tension braces and jowled posts, with blocked 2-light windows on each floor and an attic window. The rear of the building has a ground floor that is partly underbuilt and plastered, with some sections made of lias, while the first floor retains close studding. Inside, the building showcases exposed framing, jowled posts, and a queen strut roof supported by massive timbers and curved windbraces. Historically, this building served as the hall of a Guild dedicated to St. Mary and was used for manor courts in the 17th and 18th centuries.
