Description

The Council House is a public building, now used as offices, dating from the late 19th century. It is constructed of squared, coursed lias with quoins, featuring an ashlar bay on the right. The building has a storey band and a coped parapet, topped with a slate mansard roof. It stands two storeys plus an attic and has a four-window range with a rectangular plan.

In the ashlar bay to the right, there is a 19th-century plank door with a fanlight set in a round-headed arch. This is framed by a stone pilaster surround with a shallow flat hood. The four openings on the ground and first floors contain 12-pane sash windows with quoined surrounds. Behind the parapet, there are three round-headed dormers.

The right gable end features a round-headed sash window flanked by blind round-headed openings, with four stone Doric pilasters positioned between and on either side of the windows. Above, there is a large tripartite sash window on the first floor, adorned with a scroll surround and a moulded entablature. A round-headed dormer above this window has a moulded stone surround and a ball finial. The rubble bay to the right includes a plank door with a tall overlight and a quoined surround, with a 12-pane sash window above it. The interior has not been inspected.
