Description

The barn and attached shelter, located approximately 40 meters north of the farmhouse at Alcester Lodge Farm, date back to the 16th century, with a 17th-century extension and shelter sheds attached at right angles. The structure is timber framed with close studding, square framing, and diagonal braces, featuring brick infill, some lath and plaster, and weatherboarding. It has a brick and lias plinth and a 20th-century tile roof. The building is L-shaped, single storey, and consists of four bays with a two-bay addition. The second bay from the right has barn doors, while there are three stable doors on the left. The left half is entirely weatherboarded, and the right return side shows exposed framing with jowled posts. At the rear, there is exposed framing; the third bay has some close studding with lath and plaster, while the fourth and fifth bays are weatherboarded, and the sixth bay has been rebuilt in brick. Inside, there are jowled posts, retaining walls, and diagonal braces, with a close-studded gabled wall that has been opened up. The 16th-century section features three queen post roof trusses with clasped purlins and wind braces, while the addition has a queen strut truss. Later partitions and floors have been inserted. Attached at right angles is a four-bay range of shelter sheds, which have a square framed back wall with brick infill and 19th-century brick pillars, along with a tile roof and trenched purlin roof. The shelter sheds retain hay racks and other features.
