Description
The Moat House Inn is a farmhouse that has been converted into a public house. It is dated 1478 on the gable of one wing, while the north range dates from the late 16th century and the wing from the late 17th century. The building features a timber frame, with the north range mostly faced in whitewashed brick and the wing plastered with a roughcast gable. The exterior has painted sham framing and old tile roofs, with brick ridge, end, and lateral stacks. The building is arranged in an L-plan, with the north range being one storey and an attic that includes dormers and a three-window range. There is a late 20th-century glazed porch with a glazed door at the re-entrant angle. The windows throughout are a mix of 19th and 20th-century casements.
On the left return side, there is exposed framing with a heavy jowled post and whitewashed brick and plaster infill, along with an external stack. The wing is two storeys high with a one-window range. The ground floor features a canted bay, while the left side has a ribbed door and an open porch with a tiled roof. There are two first-floor windows, and the right return side has an 18th-century external stack and a ribbed door with a hood supported by shaped brackets. The rear gable also shows exposed framing. Inside, the building has exposed heavy framing and chamfered ceiling beams, along with two open fireplaces that are back to back, each featuring a stepped stop-chamfered bressumer.
