Description

Cold Comfort Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse that underwent refacing and additions in the early to mid-19th century. The building is timber framed with whitewashed brick infill and whitewashed brick. It features an old tile roof, with slate roofing on the additions, and has brick ridge, lateral, and internal chimneys. The original layout was probably L-shaped, but it has been extended to a three-span structure, with a through passage that may have been formed during the remodelling.

The front of the farmhouse appears entirely from the 19th century and consists of two storeys with a three-window range. To the left, there is a high single-storey, single-window wing that is made up of two builds. The entrance is located in the middle bay and features a half-glazed, four-panelled door with an overlight, along with a simple chamfered wood porch that has a flat roof. The mid to late 19th-century wood casements are set under shallow segmental arches. The wider left bay is a refronting of the end of the timber-framed range, where the ends of old purlins are visible in the cross gable. The ground floor is slightly recessed beneath a whitewashed beam.

On the left return side, there is a single-storey wing on the right and a one-storey and attic timber-framed wing with a small outshut on the left that projects forward. The centre and gable feature exposed framing, along with 19th-century casements and an open verandah. The rear of the farmhouse showcases substantial exposed framing from the end of the 17th-century range, with small sections rebuilt in brick. There is also a taller 19th-century range on the left. The garden front is entirely from the early to mid-19th century and is characterized by three low-pitched gables. The interior is noted for having large ceiling beams.
