Description

The Post Office and village room, which was formerly a shop and houses, dates from the 18th century and early 19th century. It is constructed of ironstone ashlar and squared, coursed ironstone. The Post Office features a coped gable on the left side and has a combination of tile and slate roofs with brick ridge and end stacks. The building is two storeys high and has a four-window range. The right section includes a 19th-century shop front with double part-glazed doors set within a wood-lined recess. Flanking the recess are five-light wood windows, each corner supported by stone plinths with wood pilasters above. On the first floor, there are two-light gabled half-dormers on both sides. The central section has a central 19th-century plank door with a segmental lintel, a 16-pane horned sash window to the left, and a three-light casement to the right. Attached to the left is an 18th-century range with a gable end facing the front, while to the right is a plank door with a wood lintel. Centrally, there is a large war memorial tablet from 1914-1918, above which is a two-light leaded casement with a wood lintel and a continuous hood mould above. Inside, the central range features a refaced open fireplace with the original bressumer behind. This building is included for its group value.
