Description
This building is a post office, originally a cottage, house and shop, dating to the late 17th century, with a significant addition from 1871 and 20th-century alterations. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings. The roof is slate, with two gable and one ridge brick stack; part of the rear has a pantile roof with a stone coped gable and off-centre brick stack. The building comprises a parallel range: the rear part is a 17th-century lobby entry cottage, while the front range is the 1871 house and shop. The front has two storeys and three bays with a central six-panelled door and fanlight featuring painted tracery, set within a stone surround with pyramid imposts and a keystone. To the right is a 19th-century shop front with a central half-glazed panelled door and overlight, flanked by three-light shop windows with transoms and slightly rounded tops, all marked by four pilasters supporting a moulded console and a slight canopy. A 20th-century three-light casement window is to the left. A datestone "AD1871" sits above the house door. The four first-floor windows are glazing bar sash windows with flat stone lintels and raised keystones, and stone cills on block brackets. The slate roof has exposed rafters. The single-storey, with attics, rear block has a 19th-century four-panelled off-centre door and 20th-century windows with a pantile roof.
