Description

Great Humby Chapel is a Chapel of Ease to Old Somerby and served as a private chapel for the now-demolished Great Humby Hall. It was originally built around the 1680s but was rebuilt in 1754, with minor alterations made in 1876 and 1980. The chapel is constructed of ashlar stone with a slate roof and features stone-coped gables. It has a single cell nave with a western bell cote. The plinth is present, and the south side has a plain door with a very low four-centred arch that has a moulded surround and a raised keystone, along with two three-light tall cavetto-moulded mullioned windows. The north and east sides each have a single similar window. The bell turret features a stone-coped gable with a finial and timber louvres for the bell chamber. The interior was refitted in 1876 with pews and a lectern, and it includes a 14th-century octagonal font with panels of traceried design. During the 1980 restoration, the ceiling was removed to expose the roof. A faculty was granted in 1754 for the complete rebuilding of the chapel by Hotchkin, maintaining its original design but reducing its size from 41 by 17 feet to 30 by 15 feet.
