Description

The Shambles is a house located on Main Street in Farnborough, dating from the late 17th century to the 18th century, with additions and alterations made in the late 19th century. The building features regular coursed squared ironstone, with an addition of red brick. The roofs are primarily tiled, with the addition and the further right range having slate roofs, and there are brick end stacks.

The house has a two-unit plan, with lower ranges on the right and an addition on the left. It stands two storeys high with an attic and has a three-window range. The chamfered doorway features a 20th-century ribbed door, and there is a blocked doorway to the immediate right with a stone flat arch. The windows are chamfered stone mullioned, with a three-light window on the ground floor and a two-light window on the first floor, although some have been partly renewed. The attic includes late 19th-century wood mullioned two-light roof dormers.

The end stacks are adorned with brick nogged cornices and pairs of diagonally-set square shafts. The lower ranges on the right, which may have been outbuildings, contain a late 19th-century two-light mullioned window. The building features leaded lights throughout, and the rear is irregular, with lower ranges partly constructed of brick. There are casements with wood lintels and a small old two-light stone mullioned staircase window. The interior has not been inspected and may have been altered during the 19th-century improvements to the Farnborough estate.
