Description
The Cottages is a house that was formerly three cottages, built in the mid-19th century, though it may have earlier origins. The structure is made of squared coursed ironstone and features a moulded string course. It has a late 20th-century tile roof and includes two brick ridge stacks along with a large stone external stack at the right end, all topped with diagonally-set square brick shafts and brick nogged cornices. The building has a T-plan layout with a central wing at the front and consists of one storey and an attic, with a three-window range. Lean-to porches are located in the re-entrant angles and have twisted balusters. There is a two-light casement window inserted in the doorway on the right side, and on the left, there is a ribbed door in the return side of the wing. The ground floor and first floor of the wing feature three-light stone mullioned windows with hood moulds. The first floor also has gabled half-dormers on the left and right, which contain painted two-light wood mullioned windows. Scalloped bargeboards with pendants adorn the building throughout. The left return side has a gabled porch with twist balusters. The interior has not been inspected. The building is included for its group value.
