Description
The Close is a house built in 1615, with possible earlier origins, and has been altered in the late 19th and 20th centuries. An early 20th-century rear wing has been added. The building is constructed of coursed squared ironstone, with part of the back wall rebuilt in brick. The slate roof features coped gable parapets, with a moulded kneeler on the left side, and has 20th-century brick end stacks. The house has a three-unit plan that has been extended to form a T-plan and is two storeys high with a four-window range.
A 20th-century half-glazed door is located in the second bay. The stone mullioned windows on the ground floor have cavetto moulding and hood moulds, with four lights to the left and above the door, and three lights above. To the right, the ground floor features 19th-century three-light windows with horizontal glazing bars and a small central window with glazing bars. The first floor has a large four-light 19th-century window on the left and a 20th-century two-light window on the right, also with horizontal glazing bars. Most openings have wood lintels, and there is a three-light mullioned window at the rear. The rear wing contains three-light chamfered stone mullioned windows.
Inside, there is a good early 17th-century staircase with shaped splat balusters, a moulded handrail, and newel posts with shaped finials. The room to the left features a fine moulded Tudor arch stone fireplace with sunk spandrels and chamfered jambs, along with an eight-panelled linenfold door that has linenfold panelling. The kitchen includes a small built-in cupboard with an early 17th-century panelled door that has two jewel mouldings. A first-floor room on the left has an open fireplace with a stop-chamfered bressumer and an early 17th-century panelled dado on one wall.
