Description
These are a pair of town houses located at 1A, 1B and 2A College Street. They were built in the 1820s. The houses are constructed of brick with buff brick headers and stucco dressings, and have a slate roof with a brick stack running across the centre and another at each end. They are arranged in an L-shape and built in the Georgian style. The houses are two storeys high with a five-window frontage, while number 2A has a symmetrical three-window frontage. The facade is detailed with five large, elliptical arched recesses. The eaves are plain. The entrances are round-headed, featuring rusticated archivolts and fanlights with radial glazing bars above six-panel doors. The windows have sills and rusticated wedge lintels with keys over twelve-pane sashes. A blind window is located in the centre of the first floor of number 2A. Modern iron railings are set upon low ashlar walls. The left return has an end brick stack. College Street was developed on land previously occupied by a medieval priests' college, which was demolished in 1799, and is part of a group of high-quality early 19th century housing.
