Description

Elmhurst is a house that dates from the 17th century or early 18th century. It is constructed of brick with coursed squared limestone on the ground floor at the front, and it has a tile roof with a coped left gable and a right brick end stack. The building is a single storey with an attic and features a two-window range. The ground floor windows have 20th-century small-paned casements, while the first floor shows signs of two blocked openings and includes a hipped dormer with a small-paned cross-casement and a skylight to the right.

On the right side of the ground floor, there is a timber lintel over later stone infill, indicating a former cart entrance. The stonework on the left side has coping and continues as a garden wall made of snecked stone with added brick courses. The left return features an ogee-headed first-floor window with a 20th-century small-paned casement under a tympanum. The gable originally had stone pinnacles, likely from the medieval college building that once occupied the site. The rear of the building has a later gabled timber porch and two dormers.

It is believed that Elmhurst was originally an outbuilding for the College, used by the medieval priests of the collegiate church of Holy Trinity, which was demolished in 1799. The stone ground floor is thought to be part of the boundary wall. The surrounding area was developed in the early 19th century as a residential neighborhood of good quality housing.
