Description

Merevale Lodges, along with their attached walls, gatepiers, and gates, date from around 1840 and are possibly designed by Edward Blore. The lodges are constructed from sandstone ashlar and limitation ashlar render, topped with a slate roof and featuring a central rendered stack. They are single-storey buildings with three bays, characterized by wide projecting pedimented central bays flanked by narrower outer bays. The lodges have a stone plinth, banded rustication at the corners, and a moulded sill course running along the entire structure. Each side features a central moulded stone cross window, with small lights at the angles. The windows are fitted with leaded lights, and the buildings have an entablature, cornice, and parapets at the angles. The pediments are adorned with moulded square vase finials at the apex and ends. On the side facing the drive, there is a doorway leading to a recessed porch located in the furthest corner from the gates. The stack includes a narrow blind round arch and a moulded cornice. There is a small brick range concealed behind the park wall, and the interior has not been inspected. Each lodge is accompanied by an attached wall and gatepier. The wall, made of sandstone ashlar with moulded coping, stands approximately 1.5 meters high and is designed in the Jacobean style, featuring bulging pilasters and two fielded panels. The rendered gatepier has a moulded stone design and a moulded shaped finial, while the gates are made of wooden open work.
