Description
Atherstone War Memorial is a Grade II listed structure made of silver-grey Cornish granite. The memorial features a wheel-head cross set on a tapered column, with a Sword of Sacrifice carved in low relief on the front face of the cross. The column is positioned on a plinth that rests on a six-stepped base, with each step symbolizing a year from 1914 to 1919.
The plinth displays an inscription and the names of 158 men who lost their lives in the First World War, which reads: IN/ GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THE/ MEN OF ATHERSTONE/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE WARS/ 1914 – 1919/ LET US LIVE TO KEEP/ WHAT THEY DIED TO SAVE.
Additionally, there are three stone panels on the steps that list the names of 46 individuals who fell in the Second World War, inscribed with: 1939 – 1945/ (NAMES).
