Description
15 and 17 Market Street are shops that have been converted into flats and offices, dating from around 1780. The buildings are constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and likely feature a slate roof. They are designed in a Georgian style and rise three storeys with a seven-window range.
The first floor has a sill band and a cornice at the top. The façade includes three round-headed entrances that alternate with two 20th-century bow windows, while there is an 18th-century shop front at the right end. The entrances are framed by doorcases with pilasters, entablature blocks, and open pediments, each featuring fanlights. The entrance to No. 17 has thick wooden glazing bars and leads to a six-fielded-panel door. The small-paned bow windows are also supported by pilasters and entablatures.
The shop front includes an entrance flanked by small-paned bow windows, an entablature, and a half-glazed door with an enriched overlight, accessed by steps with iron handrails. The early 19th-century lettering in Egyptian style adds to the character. The upper windows feature rusticated wedge lintels with keys; the first-floor windows have 12-pane horned sashes, while the second-floor windows have sills and 6-pane sashes. An enriched iron bracket and lantern are positioned over the shop front. The rear of the building has wings. Inside, No. 17 contains a staircase with turned balusters.
