Description
Porch Cottage is a house dating from the late 15th century, with later alterations and additions. It is timber-framed, although the outer walls have been replaced with brick. The roof is covered with plain tiles and features a brick ridge stack. The house is arranged in two framed bays, aligned north-south and facing west, with extensions added to the north in the 19th century and to the east in the 20th century.
The building has two storeys and a four-window front featuring 20th-century casements. To the left of the center is a 19th-century gabled porch with a shaped tile roof, and a garage door is located to the left. The main wall posts are exposed.
Inside, there is a large open fireplace in the south-west corner of the south bay. Both ground floor rooms have very wide ceiling joists. The main wall posts are heavily jowelled and supported by massive two-way curved braces. The rear wall retains large panel framing, and there is a central queen strut roof truss. Despite the alterations, Porch Cottage remains a largely intact hall with a screen's passage of possible quasi-aisled type.
