Description

Netherstowe House (North) and Netherstowe House (South) comprise a mill and house, likely dating back to the late 17th or early 18th century, with a north range added around 1800 or earlier. The buildings are constructed of brick with some dressed stone, featuring tile roofs and brick stacks.

Two parallel ranges form the main structure. The north range is three stories high with a four-window front. It has a top frieze of applied timber framing and a hipped roof. The central entrance is accessed through a six-panel door with decorative glazing bars above. Windows are characterised by sills and rubbed brick flat arches over 12-pane sashes. Notably, the ground floor window on the left end is partly blocked with a narrow sash, while the second-floor windows include a 6-pane casement and three 6-pane sashes. The range has lateral, cross-axial, and right return lateral brick stacks. The left return features some blocked segmental-headed openings, an entrance, a narrow window with a cross-casement, and a canted bay window on the ground floor, alongside an altered cross-casement and a 12-pane sash on the first floor. A projecting gable end of the south range has a stone ground floor with a partly covered buttress to the angle and a three-light transomed casement on the ground floor. The south range is two stories high, with two three-window ranges, the left one being taller. It has stone footings, and windows with sills. The left range has a projecting ground floor with two windows containing 12-pane sashes and a glazed angle porch to the entrance, which itself features a panelled doorcase with a cornice and a six-panel door. A window with a 12-pane sash is positioned to the right. The first floor has three-light small-paned casements. The range to the right has a two-light small-paned casement on the ground floor and similar three-light casements on the first floor. The left return incorporates a 20th-century projection to cellar level.

The interior of the north range includes 19th-century fireplaces and a dogleg staircase with twisted balusters. The south range contains cellars. Historically, the mill operated as a woollen manufactory from 1809, producing carpets and knitting yarn by 1827, which was an important industry in Lichfield. By 1850, production had expanded to include lace and silk coach trimmings.
