Description
Two houses, dating from circa 1760, with part now used as an office. The buildings are constructed of brick with ashlar dressings, and have hipped tile and slate roofs with brick end stacks. They are in a Georgian style, arranged over three storeys with an almost symmetrical five-window front. Features include an ashlar plinth, a sill band to each floor, a top cornice, and a stone-coped brick parapet.
The central entrance has a doorcase with panelled pilaster strips, a consoled entablature, and a pediment above a 6-fielded-panel door, with an overlight above. The left-hand entrance has a doorcase with incised pilasters, a frieze with rosettes, a cornice, and a blind overlight above a 4-fielded-panel door. The right-hand entrance has a similar doorcase with panelled pilaster strips, a frieze, and a pediment above a 6-fielded-panel door with an overlight. Windows have rubbed brick flat arches and 12-pane horned sashes, although the second-floor windows have 9-pane horned sashes. The central windows have architraves. A 19th-century shop window to the left of centre has a consoled cornice and 3-light fixed glazing.
The right-hand return features a cornice and a projecting stack. The rear of the property includes two wings; one is a hipped two-storey wing with a tripartite sash window and a canted single-storey projection below. The return to this wing has a narrow window with a pegged frame. The other, taller gabled wing has a large first-floor casement window to its return. A plaque on the front of the building records the existence of Stowe Gate, which was built for Bishop de Clinton and stood nearby from the early 12th century until the late 18th century.
