Description
St Michael's Hospital Rear Range is a former Master's House, flanked by male and female wings, part of the former Lichfield Union Workhouse, which is now a hospital. It was built between 1838 and 1840 by architects Scott and Moffatt. The building is constructed of red brick with blue brick diapering and features a tiled roof. The central three bays have gables and a central ogee-roofed cupola. It is two storeys high, with the central three bays having an attic. The design is symmetrical, with the central bay flanked by projecting single-window canted bays and slightly recessed five-window ranges that end with shallow two-window cross wings. The building has gauged brick flat arches over mostly altered modern windows and a central crenellated stone porch with a Tudor arch. To the east, there is a later addition that is not of special interest. Inside, the building retains the original stair. The Lichfield Poor Law Union was established in 1836, and a competition for a new workhouse was held soon after, which was won by G G Scott and W B Moffat. Construction began on May 24, 1838, and the workhouse officially opened on May 8, 1840.
