Description
The gatehouse range at the front of St Michael's Hospital, originally built as a workhouse, dates from 1838 to 1841 and was designed by Scott and Moffatt. It is constructed of brick featuring blue brick diapering and ashlar dressings, topped with a tiled roof and brick stacks. The building is single-storey with a two-storey gatehouse, presenting a symmetrical façade with gabled projections at each end.
The gatehouse is characterized by diagonal buttresses, a top cornice, and an embattled parapet. It features a carriage entrance with an ashlar 4-centred arch and a double-chamfered cross-mullioned window with a label mould on the first floor. The flanking wings have coped gables with kneelers. The entrance to the left of the centre has a 4-centred head and an ashlar architrave, while a similar entrance is located at the left end. The building includes double-chamfered mullioned windows with transoms, predominantly single lights, with the projections containing three-light windows and two cross-mullioned windows on the right range. The rear of the building has simpler details and mostly later windows, with two-storey gabled wings flanking the gatehouse.
