Gatehouse range to workhouse, now hospital. 1838-41. By Scott and Moffatt. Brick with blue brick diapering and ashlar dressings; tile roof with brick stacks. Single storey with 2-storey gatehouse; symmetrical range; gabled projection toward each end. Gatehouse has diagonal buttresses and top cornice and embattled parapet; carriage entrance has ashlar 4-centred arch; double-chamfered-cross-mullioned window with label mould to 1st floor. Flanking wings have coped gables with kneelers. Entrance to left of centre has 4-centred head and ashlar architrave; similar entrance to left end. Double-chamfered-mullioned windows with transoms, mostly single lights, those to projections of 3 lights, 2 cross-mullioned windows to right range. Rear has simpler details and mostly later windows; 2-storey gabled wings flank gatehouse.
