Description
The Law monument, located by the churchyard entrance to the northeast of the Church of St Michael, is a Grade II listed structure commemorating James Thomas Law, Chancellor of the Diocese and Master of the Hospital of St John, who died in 1876, and his wife Henrietta Charlotte, who died in 1866. Erected in 1864, the monument is made of ashlar stone with some stippled tooling. It features a rectangular shape set on two steps, with three trefoil-headed arches on the sides and two on the ends. The design includes a drip course, a deep frieze adorned with guilloche moulding, and a top cornice with brattishing. The monument is topped with a pyramidal ashlar roof and a finial that includes a cross within a heavy roundel. The arches are unadorned, while the square piers have capitals with side mouldings and iron rails within the arches. Inside, there are two gabled slabs with inscriptions. Originally, the monument had a clock illuminated by gas at the top roundel, intended for travelers on the main road to Burton and the Trent Valley Railway Station. Chancellor Law was a significant local benefactor.
