Description
Beacon School is an industrial school built in 1893 by R. Stevenson of Burton-on-Trent for the Walsall Education Committee. The building is constructed of red brick with Bath stone dressings and features slate roofs with hipped and gabled ends, along with brick axial and gable-end stacks.
The main front range consists of a central cross-wing, with wings at the rear surrounding a courtyard, and a superintendent's house at the east end. There is also a detached sanatorium located to the southwest, which is L-shaped in plan.
The exterior has two storeys and a three-storey central cross-wing, presenting a nine-bay north front. The center two bays are advanced and feature corner pilasters, with rusticated stone on the ground floor that rises into a parapeted gable at the center, which has a plaque inscribed with "Walsall Education Committee Beacon School." The façade includes large round-arch windows with stone archivolts and keyblocks, as well as a similar arch for the doorway on the left. Moulded stringcourses are present throughout. The left and right sides each have nine bays, with the center three bays breaking forward. The parapets have moulded coping, and the moulded stringcourses are integrated with stone window lintels and cills. Tall sash windows with glazing bars and overlights are featured prominently.
The superintendent's house, located to the left and slightly advanced, has a two-one-two bay arrangement, with a narrow center bay that includes a small gable and a round arch doorway. Canted and square bay windows are present on the ground floor, with sash windows featuring glazing bars above. The wings at the rear and behind the main range form a U-shaped plan around the courtyard, with later extensions on the west side. A large flat-roof wing from the 20th century has been added across the rear of the courtyard. The detached sanatorium to the southwest is a single-storey structure, also constructed of red brick with stone dressings, featuring a hipped slate roof and tall sash windows with glazing bars and overlights.
The interiors have not been inspected.
