Description

Nos. 3 and 5 on Saint Mary's Street are a pair of shops, now used as a shop, office, and flat. They were built in the early 19th century, with a mid-17th century wing at the rear. The building is made of red brick and has a plain tile roof. The rear wing is timber framed with painted brick nogging, featuring small square panels with short straight corner braces. The structure is two storeys high and has a toothed brick eaves cornice. There is a brick ridge stack located just off-centre to the left. The front has three bays, with 12-pane glazing bar sash windows on the first floor, each with painted stone cills. The three early 19th-century shop windows are flat-roofed square bays, with the leftmost bay still retaining small panes, and each bay has a fascia and plain cornice. The right-hand bays flank a 20th-century half-glazed door, which is surrounded by reeded pilaster strips and a blind overlight, with a continuous fascia above. To the left, there is a four-panelled door with a lower flush panel and a glazed top, topped with a flat hood on shaped brackets. The 17th-century rear wing features an exposed collar and tie-beam truss with queen struts. The front range seems to have been purpose-built as a pair of shops in the early 19th century. The interior has not been inspected.
