Description
Number 9 and part of Number 7A is a house that has been used as a shop and is now partly a dentist's surgery. It dates from the mid-17th century and was remodeled in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of red brick with a timber-framed core and has a plain-tile roof in an L-shape. It features two bays with a wing at the rear, standing one storey and attic high, with a two-storey wing.
The southeast front has a plinth to the right and a dentil brick eaves cornice. There are two gabled semi-dormers with three-light wooden casements. To the right, there is a 17th-century integral brick end stack with a base that has weathering and a chamfered offset leading to a truncated shaft with projecting ribs. The front has two windows: a segmental-headed three-light wooden casement to the right and an early 19th-century former shop window to the left, which has a surround made of reeded pilaster strips, a frieze, and a moulded cornice. The central entrance features a segmental-headed four-panelled door with a gabled porch.
On the left-hand gable end, there is a segmental-headed three-light wooden attic casement. The former early 19th-century ground-floor shop front has a window to the left and a half-glazed panelled door to the right, both with surrounds of reeded pilaster strips and a continuous frieze and cornice. The adjoining building to the left includes a first-floor three-light wooden casement, a ground-floor three-light wooden casement to the right, and a segmental-headed four-panelled door to the left, with lower panels flush and the upper glazed. This part has been rebuilt at a later date, as indicated by a straight joint.
Inside, there are pairs of chamfered spine beams, and the rear wing features a chamfered spine beam and a timber-framed end wall with square panels. The principal elevation faces Church Street, and the rear wing, which was formerly part of Number 9, is now part of Number 7.
