Description

Nos. 15 and 15A on Shropshire Street is a house that has been converted into a shop and office. It dates from the early 17th century and was remodeled in the early 19th century. The building has a timber frame that is encased in painted brick and features a plain tile roof. It consists of one framed bay, with two storeys and an attic.

The large central gabled eaves dormer has a small-paned two-light wooden casement window with a wooden returned hoodmould. The first-floor window is a glazing bar sash with a gauged-brick and stone sill. A barber's pole is attached to the first floor on the right side.

The ground floor has an early 19th-century shop front that includes a square bay with a pair of plate-glass sashes and a fascia above. There is a half-glazed door set at an angle in the right-hand corner. The right-hand gable end features first-floor and attic glazing bar sashes with gauged-brick heads and stone sills. The shop front to the left has a plate-glass sash, flanking reeded plaster strips with roundels at the top, and a fascia above. To the right, there is a small shop front with a small-paned window and a six-panelled door, along with flanking reeded pilaster strips with roundels at the top, and a fascia and cornice above.

Inside, there is a substantial amount of surviving timber frame, with a roof that includes large tie-beams and chamfered purlins with straight wind braces. The corner posts are chamfered, and there is a chamfered spine beam on the ground floor. The interior also features old oak floorboards and plank doors. The first floor was formerly jettied over Shropshire Street, and it is reported that the moulded bressumer survives behind the fascia.
